Voss Ends Cross Season Early, Undergoes Surgery

Marianne Vos finished fifth in the Dutch cyclocross championships on Sunday and immediately announced that this race would be her last of the season.

Vos' CCC-Liv team said the three-time road world champion and seven-time cyclocross world champion will need at least six weeks to recover before she can begin training for the road season.

In a statement posted on the team's website, Vos indicated that the problem is ongoing, but decided to compete in the national championships as a way to enter recuperation in good form.

"The complaints have been present for some time. Recent tests revealed the cause, and after consulting with the CCC-Liv medical team, I decided to have surgery as soon as possible." [Racing in the Dutch Championships does no harm physically. I wanted to be as fit as possible and rested so that I could push my limits one more time today."

Vos is a key player on the CCC-Liv road team, with 19 wins in 2019 alone and at the top of the Women's World Tour standings at the end of the season. She and her team wanted to time her recovery to give her enough time to start the road season in earnest.

"If everything goes according to plan, I will be able to get back into shape six weeks after the surgery," Voss said. 'I'm working with my team on the recovery process so that we can accomplish our goals during the road season. But right now our priority is to have a successful surgery."
