Cyclocross Round-Up: Aerts Takes the Lead, Yzerbito Defends DVV Lead

Over the weekend, Gage Hecht and Clara Honsinger won the elite men's and women's races at the USA Cycling Cyclocross Championships, the latter breaking Katie Compton's 15-year record of winning titles, while in Europe, Belgian champion Toon Arts ( Telenet Baloise Lions) ended the 35-fight undefeated record of Corendon Circus' Mathieu van der Poel.

Aerts won a dominant victory at the Hotondcross in Ronse, Belgium (the fourth round of the eight-round DVV Trofee series), putting series leader Eli Yzerbit (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) in second place, 1:30 back.

Yzerbitt retains the overall lead with a 1:45 lead over Aerts, while Yzerbitt's teammate Michael Vanthourenhout is back in third place, 3:08 off the overall pace.

In the women's hotondcross race, Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Corendon-Circus) won by just 21 seconds from series leader Annemarie Worst. Worst managed to extend her overall lead to over a minute over her 777 teammate Yara Castellaine, who was six seconds ahead of her.

The next day, van der Pol was back to his usual routine at the Vlaamse Druivencross in Ovalaise.

Still, the Dutch rider was only 14 seconds behind Britain's Tom Pidcock (Trinity Racing), while Quinten Hermans of Telenet Baloise Lions finished a further 13 seconds back in third place.

In the women's elite race, Worst won in Auveraise. She finished more than a minute ahead of her closest rival, Lucinda Brand (Terrenette Baloise Lions), while Worst's 777 teammate, Alice Maria Alzufi, finished third.

The next major race is the sixth round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Namur, Belgium, on December 22, followed just four days later by the seventh round in Heusden-Zolder, also in Belgium, on December 26.
