Tony Martin Crashes at Vuelta a España but Hopes to Compete in World Championship TT

Tony Martin (open in new tab) has resumed training after a bad crash on stage 19 of the Vuelta a España and hopes to be able to compete in the mixed relay time trial event that will open the World Championships (open in new tab) in Yorkshire on Sunday The team is hoping to compete in the Mixed Relay Time Trial event, the opening round of the World Championships in Yorkshire on Sunday. Despite his injury, the veteran German also intends to compete in the individual elite time trial on Wednesday.

Martin suffered a cut above his right eye and numerous other injuries in a high-speed crash during the stage to Toledo. Scrambling for Jumbo Visma team leader Primoš Roglic, Martín was forced to retire from the race and was unable to rejoice with his teammate when Roglic took the overall win at the Vuelta a España on Sunday.

The crash occurred when Britain's James Knox (Deceuninck-Quick Step) slipped on a wet descent. Several of Jumbo-Visma's teammates, including Martin and Roglic, were involved, causing a heavy crosswind chase after the Movistar team went on the attack.

The attack caused great controversy among the riders, with Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez, who was also delayed in the crash, publicly criticizing Alejandro Valverde and Movistar.

Martín returned to Germany after receiving treatment in Toledo. On Tuesday, he posted a photo on social media of him preparing to go out for a ride. He still had bandages around his right arm, right leg, and right eye, but was upbeat about the possibility of riding at the world championships.

"Back to #Bianchi. Still sore but feels good to be able to run again. Hoping to recover until the World Championships on Sunday," Martin wrote on Instagram.

Martin will compete in Sunday's mixed relay with Jasha Sutterlin (Movistar) and Nils Pollitt (Katusha-Alpecin).

He won his ninth German national time trial title in June and was selected for the 54 km individual time trial with Pollitt, but was not selected for the road race squad.

Bora-Hansgrohe's Pascal Ackermann and John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) lead the team. Nikias Arndt (Team Sunweb), Markus Burghardt (Bora-Hansgrohe), Simon Geschke (CCC Team), Jonas Koch (CCC Team), Pollitt, and Süttelin also made the eight-man team.
