Bernal and Nibali opt out of Yorkshire World Championships

Egan Bernal and Vincenzo Nibali have decided not to participate in the road world championships in Yorkshire.

Bernal was named on the Colombian team's eight-team roster on Monday, but when Bernal declined to be selected, the Colombian federation was forced to make a change in membership and Carlos Betancourt was called up in his place.

The Colombian Federation naturally wanted to include the Tour de France winner in their World Championships lineup, but Bernal had already warned that if he was not at his best and felt others could run better, he would withdraw from selection.

"I want to make it clear that I am still on the fence about whether or not I will be at the World Championships this year," Bernal wrote on Twitter on September 4. 'I'm training in Colombia to prepare for the end of the season, but if I feel I'm not in the best shape to represent my country, please give others a chance.'

Despite that message, the Colombian federation selected him, only to backtrack embarrassingly within 24 hours.

"Bernal, along with Nairo Quintana, Fernando Gaviria, Alvaro Hodeg, Sebastián Morano, Sebastián Henao, Esteban Chávez, and Daniel Martínez, were among eight players selected by coach Carlos Mario Jaramillo included," the Colombian federation said in a statement.

"However, on Monday, the deadline for registration with the UCI, the talented Team Ineos rider decided to withdraw from the selection process.

Bernal traveled to Europe last week to race in the Giro della Toscana, a one-day race on Wednesday, for the first time since the Clasica San Sebastian. On Monday, he reunited with friends in northern Italy, where he was based before joining Team Ineos and moving to Andorra.

He will also compete in the Coppa Sabatini in Tuscany on Thursday and the Marco Pantani Memorial Race on the weekend, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, before Bernal ends his season at Il Lombardia on October 12, He will also compete in the Giro delle Miglia, GP Bruno Begheri, Tre Valli Varesine, and Milan Torino.

Vincenzo Nibali was not selected for the Italian team after returning from the Canadian World Tour races in Quebec and Montreal on Monday.

The Italian, who won the Sheffield stage of the 2014 Tour de France and helped spark the overall win that year, has put aside any sense of nostalgia and has the form not even worthy of a supporting role on the eight-man Italian team for the World Championships, which is suitable for a classic athlete He admits that.

"The Italian Azzurra jersey is sacred to me. I am not in great form, so it would be wrong to take the place of another player," Nibali told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Italian team is built around Matteo Trentin, with Sonny Colbrelli and Diego Ulissi expected to be the alternate leaders. Colbrelli did not stand out in the Canadian race, but he is well suited to the undulating Yorkshire course and also likes to race in the rain.

Ulissi's fourth-place finish in Quebec and second-place finish in Montreal have cemented his position as Squadra Azzurra's leader. Italian national coach Davide Cassani will name his final eight players next Monday after Marco Pantani's memorial.
